Ancient amphorae still lying where cargoes went over the side, half-buried in the rock and sand, and the Labyrinth of Telendos, a maze of rock, arches, canyons and caves running along the island's underwater flank with coral and dense fish life. Kalymnos was the sponge-diving capital of the Mediterranean and its seabed carries the wreckage of three thousand years of Aegean trade. Greece kept almost all of its seabed closed to recreational diving until 2005, precisely to stop antiquities being lifted, which is why this material is still in place. Anchorage: Anchor in the Telendos channel off Myrties, with the sheer face of Telendos above you and the Kalymnos climbing cliffs behind. Hazards: Protected antiquities with strict no-touch rules, and caves that are genuine overhead environments.
