An 81-metre cargo ship sitting upright on the sand with her holds and superstructure intact, swarmed by fish that have made a reef of her, plus the lava-cut cave dives on the same coast that open only part of the year. Sagami Bay drops to more than 1,500m within sight of shore, which is why Izu diving goes from beginner reefs to deep water in a few miles. Atami's dive scene grew out of the resort trade, the wreck is a 20-minute run from a town best known for onsen. Anchorage: Atami is a hot-spring resort town with a harbour, an hour from Tokyo, and the standard first stop down the Izu peninsula. Hazards: Depth, boat traffic and reduced visibility after rain.
