The greatest tidal range on the planet to 160 billion tonnes of water in and out twice a day. You walk on the seabed among 20m 'flowerpot' sea stacks at Hopewell Rocks, then kayak between their tops six hours later. Tidal bores run up the rivers as a visible wave, and the plankton bloom the tides drive brings North Atlantic right whales, finbacks and humpbacks. The bay's length and shape put it in near-resonance with the Atlantic tidal period, amplifying the range, a rare natural coincidence. The Mi'kmaq explain it as a giant whale splashing. It is one of the most important right whale feeding grounds for a species down to a few hundred animals. Anchorage: Plan every anchorage around a 16m range, many upper-bay spots are dry at low water. Hazards: The highest tides on earth. Boats left afloat can end up on the mud; people have been cut off by the incoming tide. Tide tables are not optional here.
