A limestone cave whose interior glows electric cobalt, light enters through the underwater mouth and reflects off a white sand floor, the same physics as Capri but you can snorkel in freely. Sergeant majors swarm the entrance, and the reef wall outside drops past 30m. Cape Maeda's cave was a local fishing landmark long before it became a tourist site; Okinawan divers call it Aoi Dokutsu. It is now the most-visited snorkel site in Japan, which has forced entry limits and guide requirements at peak times. Anchorage: Anchor off Cape Maeda in settled weather; most visitors arrive by road or small boat. Hazards: Extremely busy with tour groups. Closed when swell picks up on the west coast, the stair entry becomes dangerous.
