Fourteen islands that were Tito's private summer state, a 1st-century BC Roman villa on the shore at Verige Bay, dinosaur footprints in the limestone, a safari park with descendants of animals gifted by Nehru and Haile Selassie, and the best-preserved Mediterranean parkland in Croatia. Developed as a luxury spa in 1893 by Austrian industrialist Paul Kupelwieser, who had Robert Koch himself eradicate the islands' malaria. Tito made Brijuni his residence from 1949 and hosted around 100 heads of state here; the Non-Aligned Movement was effectively conceived on these islands in 1956. Anchorage: Park moorings at Veli Brijun. A rare Croatian anchorage where you moor beside a Roman villa and a zebra enclosure. Hazards: Anchoring is restricted throughout the park; take a mooring and register.
