The wreck of the light cruiser SMS Dresden, scuttled here in March 1915, lying in deep water below the bay, plus the endemic Juan Fernández lobster and fish species that exist only on these seamounts. The Dresden was the last survivor of von Spee's East Asia Squadron after the Battle of the Falklands, and was caught here by British cruisers in a neutral Chilean port. Her crew scuttled her; the Chilean government protested the violation of its neutrality. The island's other claim is Alexander Selkirk, marooned here in 1704 and the model for Robinson Crusoe. Anchorage: Cumberland Bay off San Juan Bautista is the anchorage for the whole archipelago, deep and open to the north, the 2010 tsunami came into this bay and killed sixteen people. Hazards: A deep wreck 360 nautical miles offshore with no chamber and no rescue. Expedition diving only.
