Cedar and fir rainforest running down to the water, snow peaks above, and, because the tides from north and south meet and cancel here, surface water warmer than anywhere on the Pacific coast north of California. Oysters you can pick at low tide, prawns, seals, and orca and humpback in the passes. Named by Captain Vancouver in 1792, who found it gloomy, 'our residence here was truly forlorn'. Every subsequent visitor has disagreed. The Tla'amin, Klahoose and Homalco Nations have harvested these inlets for millennia; ancient clam gardens, deliberately built stone terraces, line the shores. Anchorage: Dozens of landlocked coves, Prideaux Haven, Laura Cove, Tenedos Bay. Deep water and stern-tying are the local technique. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
