A German steamer lost in 1940 lying on a slope, largely intact and dived from 20m down past 45m, plus around thirty other historic wrecks within reach of the same sounds, Norway's densest concentration of accessible wreck diving. The Norwegian campaign of 1940 put shipping of every flag on this coast and a great deal of it on the bottom. Cold, low-salinity water and no shipworm mean the wrecks stay in remarkable condition, which is the same reason the Baltic preserves its own. Anchorage: The Gulen skerries at the mouth of the Sognefjord are a sheltered maze of natural harbours, Norway has some 3,500 charted naturhavner and this is one of the best-used stretches. Hazards: Cold water year-round, depth, and tidal streams through the sounds. Drysuit diving with local guides.
