A 120ft candy-striped lighthouse from 1862 that is one of only around three hand-cranked kerosene lighthouses still working anywhere on earth, the keeper still winds the weights and pumps the pressurised fuel by hand every night. Below it, a pastel Loyalist village and a harbour full of boats. Abaco wreckers fought the lighthouse's construction and repeatedly sabotaged it, because a lit reef meant no more salvage income. It was finished anyway in 1863. Hope Town was founded in 1785 by Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution, and the same family names are still on the houses. Anchorage: A near-landlocked harbour with a mooring field, overlooked by the lighthouse. One of the finest small-boat harbours in the Bahamas. Hazards: The harbour entrance is narrow and shoal. The Abacos were devastated by Hurricane Dorian in 2019, verify current facilities.
