Okinawa's best wall diving, sheer drops from 10m past 40m with soft coral, big schools of bigeye trevally, grey reef sharks and turtles, plus the shallow crescent reef at Minna which is one of Japan's finest easy snorkels. Far fewer boats than Cape Maeda. Ie-jima was the site of ferocious fighting in April 1945 and is where the war correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed, a monument marks the spot. The island's Mount Gusuku is a sacred site with a summit shrine, and the surrounding reefs were left largely undived until the 1990s. Anchorage: Anchor in the lee of Ie-jima or Minna-jima, good shelter depending on wind. Hazards: Strong current on the outer walls. Typhoon season Jul-Oct.
