Wide sand flats that surface at low tide in the middle of Florida Bay, with boats rafted up, rays and small sharks working the edges, and nothing but water in every direction. The Keys sandbar culture in its original form. These banks are the top of the Florida Bay carbonate mud platform, built over thousands of years by seagrass trapping sediment. Islamorada built its identity as the sport-fishing capital of the world on the flats around them, bonefish, permit and tarpon are all here. Anchorage: Anchor on sand in 1-1.5m at the bar edge. Time it for low water or there is nothing to stand on. Hazards: Anchor on sand, never seagrass, scarring is enforced. The bar submerges on the flood; know the tide.
