Seamounts rising from 60m to within 12m of the surface, wrapped in barracuda, dentex and amberjack, with groupers big enough to be startling, the reserve has been closed to fishing since 1995 and the fish know it. Two liner wrecks lie on the banks, the Sirio, lost in 1906, and the Naranjito. The Sirio went onto the Bajo de Fuera in August 1906 with emigrants bound for South America and sank in minutes with heavy loss of life, one of the worst peacetime wrecks in Spanish waters. The 1995 marine reserve turned a fished-out headland into the country's showpiece for what protection does. Anchorage: Anchor off Cabo de Palos or lie in the Mar Menor; anchoring inside the reserve itself is banned. Hazards: Strong current over the seamounts and depth on the wrecks. Boat traffic on the surface, so a delayed SMB is standard.
