A 130km island four miles wide, where the Atlantic side has 30m cliffs and the bank side is pale flats, you can see both oceans from the ridge. Columbus Point at the south end has a monument on the headland, and Dean's Blue Hole is on the same coast. Columbus's third landfall in 1492, which he named Fernandina. Long Island later ran cotton plantations whose ruins still stand, and its two Clarence Town churches were both built by the same man, Father Jerome, a priest and trained architect who built one as an Anglican and the other after converting to Catholicism. Anchorage: Clarence Town is a well-sheltered harbour with two churches on the skyline; Thompson Bay is the cruisers' hole further north. Hazards: The Atlantic east coast is exposed and unforgiving; stay on the bank side.
