Seven hundred square kilometres of lagoon inside a double barrier reef, with hundreds of forested islands, some of the healthiest coral in the Pacific, WWII wrecks and aircraft in the shallows, and villages where dugout canoes are still the transport. Almost nobody cruises here. Nominated for UNESCO World Heritage and withdrawn because customary landowners, who hold nearly all land in the Solomons under traditional tenure, could not agree terms. Logging pressure is the live threat. The Solomons saw ferocious WWII fighting; wrecks and aircraft are everywhere. Anchorage: The largest saltwater lagoon in the world, enclosed by a double barrier reef, near-limitless sheltered anchoring. Almost no services; full self-sufficiency required. Hazards: The largest saltwater lagoon in the world, enclosed by a double barrier reef, near-limitless sheltered anchoring.
