What Bora Bora looked like sixty years ago. The same dramatic basalt peak, the same multi-blue lagoon, a population of 1,200, no resorts, and manta rays on a cleaning station inside the lagoon in 10m. The pass keeps the charter fleet out. Maupiti's people have repeatedly voted against resort development, choosing family pensions instead, a rare and deliberate rejection of the Bora Bora model. Marae (stone temple platforms) on the motus date back over a thousand years and are among the oldest in Polynesia. Anchorage: Excellent lagoon shelter, but the single pass (Onoiau) is narrow, shallow and breaks in southerly swell. Entry requires a settled forecast and good light. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
