A sandstone reef 4nm offshore in 30m of water where bull sharks, tiger sharks, hammerhead schools and ragged-tooth sharks pass through on the Agulhas Current, along with whales and dolphins on the surface in season. There is no cage and no bottom to stand on. This stretch of KwaZulu-Natal is where the sardine run comes ashore each winter, the largest biomass migration on the planet, and the shark diving here grew directly out of it. Protea Banks was opened to sport diving in the 1990s and has stayed a specialist site. Anchorage: No anchorage. Durban is the harbour on this coast; the bank is a launch-and-return day objective. Hazards: A deep drift dive in blue water with bull, tiger and hammerhead sharks and no cage. Advanced certification and a briefing that is taken seriously.
