An island you can hold in one photograph, reef on the windward side of Green Cay, and, from the water, the whole run of Tortola and Jost Van Dyke around you. Sandy Spit is what is left of a larger cay; hurricanes have repeatedly stripped and rebuilt it, and its palms have been replanted more than once. It is protected as part of the BVI's national parks system. Anchorage: A day anchorage off a sand islet with a handful of palms, the postcard island of the BVI, and small enough to walk round in three minutes. Green Cay next door has the reef. Hazards: No overnight shelter, current between the cay and Jost Van Dyke, and the reef on Green Cay's east side breaks in swell.
