A rock wall dropping into a fjord, with wolf eels living in the same crevices year after year, giant Pacific octopus, cloud sponges and rockfish. It is the site people from Seattle drive to when they want to be sure of seeing something big and strange. Hood Canal is a glacial fjord, not a canal, cut by ice and left deep and narrow. Sund Rock has been dived since the 1960s and is now managed through a local shop, which is what has kept it in the condition it is in. Anchorage: No anchorage at the rock; small boats work off it and yachts lie further up the canal. Most people dive it from the shore. Hazards: Cold, dark water and a wall that drops past recreational limits. Hood Canal suffers seasonal low-oxygen events that can kill fish and change what is there. Access is by permit, so arrange it before you arrive.
