The Keys' best natural beach, deep sand rather than the usual rock and marl, with the ruined 1912 Flagler railroad bridge arcing overhead, its centre span removed. Deep water close in, tarpon under the bridge, and the clearest inshore water in the Middle Keys. The bridge carried Flagler's Overseas Railroad, the engineering marvel that ran trains to Key West from 1912 until the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, the most intense hurricane on record in the US, destroyed the line and killed hundreds of veterans working on the highway. The rails became a road; the road became this ruin. Anchorage: Anchor off Calusa or Sandspur beach in 2-4m sand, or use the small park basin. Current through the channel is serious. Hazards: Bahia Honda Channel has the strongest tidal flow in the Keys, time transits and set enough scope.
