A working harbour under forested hills, howler monkeys and parrots in Scotland Bay at dusk, and the largest concentration of marine trades south of Sint Maarten. Chaguaramas was a US naval base under the 1941 lend-lease deal and the infrastructure it left became the boatyards. Trinidad sits on the South American shelf, which is why it has oil, mud and no hurricanes. Anchorage: Several anchorages in one bay, Western Main Road, Williams Bay and, round the corner, the steep-sided Scotland Bay with nothing ashore. Full boatyards, haul-out and trades, and south of the hurricane belt, which is why the fleet comes here in summer. Hazards: Strong tidal streams through the Bocas del Dragón between Trinidad and Venezuela, and the water is silty, this is a yard-and-shelter anchorage, not a swimming one.
