Seven wrecks in a few square miles, the merchantman Anna Maria, built in Amsterdam in 1694 and burnt and sunk in 1709 with her cargo of planks and bar iron; the unidentified Jutholm wreck from around 1700; and the frigate Bodekull, built in 1660 for Karl X Gustav. Wooden ships standing upright with masts, rails and carvings intact. Over a hundred thousand wrecks are estimated to lie in the Baltic, and hundreds of them are well preserved around Stockholm alone. Brackish water, cold, dark and low oxygen mean there is no shipworm, so timber survives almost unchanged, nowhere else on earth preserves wooden ships like this. Anchorage: Dalarö was the customs station and naval anchorage for Stockholm, which is exactly why the wrecks are here, and the archipelago around it is the finest cruising ground in the Baltic. Hazards: Cold water, silt-outs and protected archaeology. Nothing is touched or lifted, and the protected three require a guide.
