A reef in open ocean with a British-built lighthouse on it, big schools of tuna, grouper and snapper, grey reef sharks, and the scattered remains of the Silver Wreck, cannon, and the fused concretions of silver rupees that gave the site its name. On 22 March 1961 Arthur C. Clarke and Mike Wilson found an unknown wreck on the reef carrying sacks of silver coins struck at Surat for the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, fused by three centuries of seawater into solid blocks of rupees. Clarke wrote The Treasure of the Great Reef about it. Anchorage: No anchorage. Kirinda is the launch point and the reef is a day objective in a flat-calm window. Hazards: A famously short season, the sea here is only workable in March and April, and the current runs hard the rest of the year.
