Hin Muang, the purple rock, is a submerged ridge blanketed in violet soft coral that drops past 60m, the deepest wall in Thai waters. Hin Daeng, the red rock, barely breaks the surface and pulls in manta rays and whale sharks on the current. Grey reef sharks and huge schools of trevally work both. The two pinnacles are only 500m apart and were unknown to sport divers until the 1980s, when Phuket liveaboards started running this far south. They sit far enough offshore that the 2010 and 2016 bleaching events hit them less hard than the coastal reefs. Anchorage: No anchorage. These are a passage stop between Phuket, Lanta and Langkawi in settled weather only. Hazards: Thailand's deepest wall with strong current and no shelter. Advanced only, and drift-diving discipline matters.
