Two completely different phenomena in one lagoon. In summer the water throws blue-white light off every paddle stroke, and mullet and dolphins leave glowing wakes. In autumn and winter, comb jellies drift like slow-moving lanterns you can lift in your hands. All of it inside the Merritt Island wildlife refuge next to the Kennedy Space Center, you can sometimes watch a rocket launch over glowing water. The Indian River Lagoon is North America's most biodiverse estuary with over 4,000 species, and also one of its most stressed, nutrient runoff has driven algal blooms, seagrass die-off and manatee starvation events since 2011. The bioluminescence is genuine but the ecosystem behind it is in trouble, which is worth saying honestly. Anchorage: Shallow lagoon inside the Intracoastal Waterway, shoal-draft and tender work; Titusville marina. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
