You anchor in a rock pool at the foot of the Black Cuillin, the most serious mountain range in Britain, with 900m of bare gabbro rising straight out of the water. A 200m walk over rock takes you to Loch Coruisk, a freshwater loch that Turner painted and Walter Scott made famous. Otters, seals and golden eagles. Scott's 1815 poem 'The Lord of the Isles' brought Victorian tourists by steamer; Turner sketched Coruisk in 1831. The Cuillin's gabbro is so magnetic it deflects compasses, climbers navigate by feature, not needle. Anchorage: Regularly voted Britain's most spectacular anchorage. Good holding in the pool but squally off the mountains, and a swell works in from the south. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
