A white coral-sand beach at Xiafeng Bay with water clear enough to swim in, rare this close to the Pearl River, and rare red coral colonies on the seabed offshore. It is the outermost inhabited island of the Zhuhai group and feels a long way from Guangdong. The Wanshan islands guard the mouth of the Pearl River, the approach to Guangzhou, Macau and Hong Kong, and have been a pirate, fishing and naval station for centuries. Their outer edge has clear ocean water because the river plume stops short of them. Anchorage: The Wanshan archipelago is the outer edge of the Pearl River estuary, Miaowan is one of the few islands out here with clear water and a sand beach. Hazards: Typhoon season, a long exposed crossing from Zhuhai, and border-control formalities in this archipelago.
