A rubble wall covered in metridium anemones with several hundred sea lions living on top of it, and a sand flat alongside where otters work the kelp. It is a training site and a novelty at once, the easiest cold-water diving in California, in the middle of a working harbour. Built in the 1930s to protect the sardine fleet that made Cannery Row, and left as the fishery collapsed at the end of the 1940s. The sea lions moved onto it, the aquarium opened at the far end of the Row in 1984, and the wall became the most-dived piece of water on the west coast. Anchorage: Lie in Monterey harbour and step off the beach. Anchoring in the bay outside is possible in settled weather but the harbour is the point of coming here. Hazards: Sea lions in numbers, which are wild animals and will let you know when you are close enough, and boat traffic in the harbour entrance.
