A heart-shaped rock rising out of the Arabian Sea with hard coral, big schools of snapper and fusilier, honeycomb morays, cobia and occasional whale sharks and orcas offshore. The visibility is nothing like the Andamans, but the fish life is dense. Netrani was used as a bombing target by the Indian Navy until the practice was halted in the 2010s after protest by divers and conservationists, the reef recovered fast once the shelling stopped. Indian mythology and the Murudeshwar temple complex on the facing headland tie the island into the Shiva legend of the Atma Linga. Anchorage: No anchorage at the island. Murudeshwar roads is the mainland stop, under the 37m Shiva statue on the headland. Hazards: Unexploded ordnance was cleared but the island stays off-limits ashore; open-sea crossing with no shelter.
