A Curtiss C-46 Commando lying in 3m of glass-clear turquoise, fuselage and both wings intact enough to read as an aeroplane from the air, with the tail broken away. Snapper and sergeant majors inside the cabin, rays on the sand. One of the most photogenic wrecks anywhere because of the water colour, and utterly accessible, kids can snorkel it. A C-46 (registration N355BY) that ditched short of the Norman's Cay runway in 1980, flown by Andrew 'British Andy' Barnes. Norman's Cay was the Caribbean transshipment hub of the Medellín cartel, run on the ground by Carlos Lehder, who bought up the island and terrorised residents off it, Escobar's name is attached in popular retelling and the exact ownership of this airframe is still argued over. Worth telling as the Lehder/Norman's Cay story rather than overclaiming Escobar. Anchorage: Excellent, anchor in 3-6m sand off Norman's Cay, a standard Exuma overnight. The wreck sits on a sandbar between two spits and is a short tender hop. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
