Up to 3,000 North Atlantic humpbacks use these waters each winter, and Samaná Bay is where mothers bring newborn calves, breaching, tail-lobbing and singing males in a sheltered bay you can watch from a comfortable boat. The most family-friendly whale encounter in the Caribbean. Samaná was one of the first places in the world to regulate whale watching, from 1994, with a permit system, approach distances and a ban on swimming inside the bay, the offshore Silver Bank handles the in-water encounters instead. The split has kept the calving ground calm. Anchorage: Anchor or berth in Samaná Bay, sheltered and central to the action. Hazards: Operator crowding at peak; approach rules are regulated.
