The northernmost true Florida Keys, small mangrove and hardwood islands 6nm south of Key Biscayne where Biscayne Bay's development abruptly stops and the national park begins. Clear water over seagrass and patch reef, no buildings, and the Miami skyline still on the horizon behind you. Soldier Key was named for the soldiers stationed there during the Seminole Wars and later hosted a fishing club Ralph Middleton Munroe helped run. The Ragged Keys were slated for a resort and causeway development in the 1960s, the fight to stop it created Biscayne National Monument in 1968, and the park in 1980. Anchorage: Anchor in 2-4m sand in the lee of the keys. Shoal-draught work and eyeball navigation, the flats between here and Elliott Key are unforgiving. Hazards: Anchor on sand only; seagrass scarring in the park carries penalties. Shoal water throughout.
