Gravestones, crypts and the foundations of a Spanish-era cemetery lying under a few metres of water, now covered in coral and fish, with a monumental white cross built on the reef above to mark what is down there. Turtles work the shallows and the whole thing is visible on a snorkel. Mount Vulcan erupted in 1871 and dropped this part of Camiguin, taking the old town of Catarman and its cemetery into the sea. The ruined Spanish church walls still stand on the shore nearby. The cross was raised in 1982 so the drowned graveyard would not be forgotten. Anchorage: Anchor off Bonbon in settled weather; the big white cross is the landmark. Hazards: Boat traffic around the cross; the deeper gravestones are silty.
