An 11th-century sea temple on a 70m cliff with the Indian Ocean breaking below it, lit orange from the water while a fire dance plays out on the clifftop. World-class reef breaks, Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, firing directly beneath you. From the sea you get the whole cliff line rather than a crowded viewing platform. Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali's six sad kahyangan, the island's spiritual pillars, dedicated to the sea gods and dating to the 11th century. Tanah Lot, further north, sits on a rock cut off at high tide. Both are working temples first and sunset attractions second, respect matters here. Anchorage: No shelter on the south-west coast; Benoa Harbour is the base. Big Indian Ocean swell, this is a standoff viewing run, not an anchorage. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
