Schooling scalloped hammerheads in winter, one of the very few reliable hammerhead aggregations in the northern Pacific, in numbers that occasionally reach the hundreds. Also the Yonaguni Monument's terraced formations, and hammerheads passing over them. Yonaguni is Japan's westernmost inhabited point, closer to Taiwan than to Okinawa's main island. The hammerhead aggregation was only established as a dive product in the 1990s by local operators, in the same decade the Monument was found. Both discoveries came from the same small handful of divers. Anchorage: Kubura or Sonai harbour. Yonaguni is 67nm from Ishigaki and 60nm from Taiwan, a committed passage. Hazards: The Kuroshio current here is genuinely powerful and the sites are exposed. Winter seas can cancel diving for days. Advanced/drift experience essential.
