Kelp forest as thick as any on the coast inside a no-take reserve, so the sheephead and lobster are the size they used to be everywhere, with sea lions throughout and the 12m Arch Rock standing off the east point above it all. A lighthouse island, lit in 1932 and the last permanently manned light on the west coast, farmed briefly and grazed badly. The east end became one of California's first marine reserves, and the removal of rats in the early 2000s brought the seabird colonies back. Anchorage: Day anchorages only, chosen by wind, Landing Cove and the coves on the lee side. Nobody sits out a blow at Anacapa, and Smugglers or Prisoners on Santa Cruz is the retreat. Hazards: Swell and surge along the whole island, and no all-weather anchorage anywhere on it. The reserve is no-take and enforced.
