An almost complete B-17 sitting upright on white sand at 72m, wings spread and three of four engines in place, in 40m visibility, the aircraft looks like it landed there. One of the finest aircraft wrecks in Europe and one of the least visited. Ditched in February 1944 returning from a raid on Austria with two engines out; the crew put her down on the sea off Vis and all ten were rescued by British air-sea rescue based on the island. Vis was an Allied forward airbase in the Adriatic, and several aircraft lie in these waters. Anchorage: Anchor in Komiža bay; the aircraft is a short offshore run. Hazards: 72m, trimix, staged decompression and a specialist operator. This is a serious technical dive and a war memorial.
