Seventeen miles of genuinely pink beach, the tint comes from crushed red conch and foraminifera shell, usually with nobody on it. Behind it, Codrington Lagoon holds one of the largest magnificent frigatebird colonies in the world, 5,000 birds you reach by small boat, males inflating scarlet throat pouches. Barbuda was leased in its entirety by the Codrington family from 1685; the population held land in common rather than individually, a system that survived until Hurricane Irma destroyed every building on the island in 2017 and forced a total evacuation. Land rights and resort development have been contested ever since. Anchorage: Long open roadstead, good in the trades, exposed to any westerly. Reefs offshore require careful approach. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
