A vortex of thousands of chevron barracuda so dense it blacks out the sun, plus green turtles in absurd numbers (dozens per dive), whitetip and grey reef sharks, bumphead parrotfish at dawn, and a 600m wall dropping straight off the beach. Sipadan is an oceanic pinnacle rising from the seabed, Cousteau filmed 'Ghost of the Sea Turtles' here in 1989 and called it untouched. Resorts were removed from the island in 2004 to protect it, and diver numbers have been hard-capped ever since. Anchorage: Sipadan is a strict no-stay island, permits capped (176 divers/day); base at Mabul/Kapalai. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
