The only place in Costa Rica you can dive with bull sharks, and they are big to 2.5m animals are routine at the Big Scare site, circling in the channel. Also manta, huge schools of jack, and humpbacks passing offshore in season. Part of Santa Rosa National Park and the Guanacaste Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Papagayo winds that make the crossing rough in winter also drive the upwelling that brings the nutrients, and the sharks. Anchorage: Anchor in Bahía Culebra or off the islands in settled weather; the crossing is exposed. Hazards: Advanced Open Water minimum. Strong current, surge and a rough 25nm crossing. Visibility swings wildly within a single dive.
