A vaulted golden sandstone dome with a perfect circular hole in the roof, a private beach inside, and two sea arches for entrances. When the sun is overhead the oculus drops a column of light onto the sand. The most photographed sea cave in Europe. Carved by Atlantic swell into soft Miocene limestone over millennia. Access got so out of control by 2019, hundreds of boats, injuries, litter, that Portugal banned motorised entry in 2021. Go at dawn or accept a crowd. Anchorage: Anchor off the Benagil coast in settled weather, the cliff coast is exposed to Atlantic swell. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
