A 100m+ shaft in the fringing reef, ringed by coral in 6m of water, one of the world's best easy snorkels. Below, a tunnel called the Arch cuts through the reef wall at 56m and opens into open ocean, a sight divers describe as the gates of a cathedral. Freedivers use the shaft for depth training. Nicknamed 'the Diver's Cemetery', a memorial wall of plaques above the beach commemorates dozens who died attempting the Arch, mostly on air, mostly from narcosis at depth. The 1997 death of Yuri Lipski, filmed on his own camera, became one of diving's most-cited cautionary tales. Snorkelling it is entirely benign; the Arch is not. Anchorage: Exposed shoreline; road access. Boat approach possible in settled weather. Hazards: IMPORTANT, the shallow rim is a superb, safe snorkel; the Arch at 56m has killed a large number of divers and should be framed as technical-only.
