A 65-foot ornamental stone lighthouse on an island you can only reach by boat, with a walled harbour just big enough for a handful of yachts and a view straight back to the Miami skyline 20 miles north. Elliott Key next door is the northernmost of the true Florida Keys with hardwood hammock and empty beaches. Boca Chita was the private island of Mark Honeywell, the heating-controls magnate, who built the lighthouse in the 1930s purely as a folly, it was never a working navigational aid. The islands became Biscayne National Park in 1980, saving them from a planned industrial seaport and a causeway development. Anchorage: Boca Chita's tiny man-made harbour is one of the most charming stops in Florida, first-come dockage, no water or power. Elliott Key has a larger harbour and anchorage. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
