The most fish-dense water on earth. Dr Gerry Allen counted 374 species on a single dive here in 2012, a world record. Walls of bigeye trevally, batfish, sweetlips, wobbegong sharks under ledges, and 75% of all known hard coral species in the region. Raja Ampat sat unmapped by divers until the late 1990s; a 2001 Conservation International survey revealed it as the global epicentre of marine biodiversity. Locally-run no-take zones and a 2010 shark sanctuary have kept it that way, one of conservation's genuine wins. Anchorage: Excellent, sheltered anchorages throughout the Dampier Strait; Raja Ampat is a premier expedition-yacht cruising ground. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
