Flattened iron hull plating, ribs and machinery spread across Elbow Reef in 5-8m, thoroughly overgrown and full of fish. Visually modest, but the history is the best on the trail, and the surrounding reef makes it a rich snorkel. On 15 February 1898 the City of Washington was moored alongside USS Maine in Havana harbour when the Maine exploded, her crew rowed into the burning water and pulled survivors out, an act that arguably started the Spanish-American War in front of their eyes. Later a coal barge, she was wrecked on Elbow Reef in 1917. Anchorage: Mooring buoys on Elbow Reef. Hazards: Shallow with surge; the site is flattened, so watch for entanglement.
