Potato cod the size of wheelbarrows that swim straight up to your mask, a dozen resident giants habituated over forty years. Plus the Ribbon Reefs' outer wall to 30-40m viz, maori wrasse, reef sharks, and in winter dwarf minke whales that approach snorkellers on the surface. Discovered as a dive site in the 1970s; the cod were hand-fed for decades until feeding was phased out. The Ribbon Reefs remain among the healthiest sections of the GBR, having escaped the worst of the 2016-2024 bleaching events that hit the central and southern reef. Anchorage: Lizard Island's Watsons Bay is a legendary anchorage; reef moorings on the Ribbons. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
