Cordelia Banks holds one of the densest surviving thickets of critically endangered staghorn coral in the Caribbean, a genuine time capsule. Mary's Place is a narrow volcanic fissure you fly down between coral walls. Roatán also has habituated seahorses, and Utila next door is a whale shark hotspot. Cordelia Banks was declared a protected Site of Wildlife Importance in 2012 specifically because its Acropora cervicornis thickets survived the region-wide 1980s die-off that killed 95% of Caribbean staghorn. It is now a genetic reservoir used for restoration across the region. Anchorage: Roatán's French Harbour and Coxen Hole; extensive fringing reef with moorings. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
