A dozen Japanese ships in warm, shallow, penetrable condition, the seaplane tender Akitsushima with her giant crane collapsed alongside, the refrigeration ship Irako almost fully intact, Okikawa Maru's 160m of tanker in easy depths. Combine with Barracuda Lake's thermocline and Kayangan Lake ashore. Sunk on 24 September 1944 in a US carrier strike launched at extreme range from 340 miles away, the longest-range carrier air raid of the war to that date. The Japanese fleet had hidden among the karst islands believing they were out of reach. Anchorage: Superb sheltered anchorages among the Calamian karst islands, one of Asia's best cruising grounds. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
