Giant kelp forests standing in green water, cold-water corals, sea lion colonies, and the wrecks of ships that failed to make the passage, all inside the strait that was the only sea route between the Atlantic and the Pacific before the Panama Canal. Magellan came through in 1520 and for four centuries every ship between the oceans had to. The strait's floor is scattered with the ones that did not make it. San Isidro lighthouse marks the corner where the weather changes character. Anchorage: Anchorages along the strait are exposed to katabatic williwaws off the Patagonian ice; Punta Arenas is the working port. Hazards: Four-degree water, williwaws, strong tides and no infrastructure. Serious drysuit diving at the end of the world.
