A 15km fjord 1,700m deep in rock, with the Seven Sisters falling 250m in seven separate streams on one side and the Suitor facing them across the water. Abandoned cliff farms cling to ledges hundreds of metres up. Norway's most photographed fjord, and from a boat you get it without the cruise-ship crowds. UNESCO World Heritage since 2005. The cliff farms, Skageflå, Knivsflå, were worked into the 1900s; families reportedly roped their children to the ground to stop them falling off. Their tenants could not be taxed, because tax collectors refused to climb up. Anchorage: Deep water throughout, most vessels take the Geiranger quay rather than anchor. Hazards: Åkerneset mountain is monitored for a predicted future rockslide and tsunami; the fjord has an alert system.
