You drop through a tunnel and come out onto a wall completely covered in white soft coral, a snowfield tilted at 70 degrees, 60m of it. The 'white' is actually pale lilac soft coral that inflates only in current, so timing is everything. Fiji is the soft coral capital of the world for a reason. Somosomo Strait funnels nutrient-rich water between Vanua Levu and Taveuni, feeding soft corals to a density found nowhere else. Fijian villages hold traditional fishing rights (qoliqoli) over these reefs and many have declared their own no-take zones. Anchorage: Anchor in Viani Bay, one of the finest anchorages in Fiji, right on the strait. Hazards: Must be dived on the correct tide for the coral to be open.
